Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
Check out Pauline Reese's version of Hard Candy Christmas, live:
As a fan of TBLWIT since 1984, then aged 13, from England, I'm delighted to find this fantastic community. The first 2 times I saw the film - ages 13 and 15 - I didn't know it was based on a true story, thought it was completely fictional, and found the finality of the ending so sad that I was always writing sequels in my head! In 1988, now 16, I saw the video on sale in a shop and read the blurb : "The demise of the real-life Chicken Ranch inspired the hit stage play..." Of course that killed my sequels stone dead, but I thought little more about the Chicken Ranch for 13 years apart from catching the film every time it was repeated on UK TV (used to be every 2 years but we never seem to see it now :( ). My jigsaw was completed in 2001, when, living in London, I saw a production of the stage play, by students at Loughton College, advertised and just had to go. The production was very good : in a nice twist, Jewel wasn't a middle-aged maid but the Chicken Ranch's top whore, Miss Mona's second-in-command. I liked that, as it gave an extra poignancy to her taking a day off to see her lover, and she was played by one Lydia Martin, a superb and beautiful actress. I hope Lydia's still acting now, she deserves to be a massive success. Laura Vale, who played Miss Mona, was a lot more matronly than Dolly but very good in her own way. Her heartfelt performance of The Bus To Amarillo was most impressive and made up for the absence of I Will Always Love You. Also the programme carried a brief history of the real Chicken Ranch. Curious to know more, I Googled and bought Jann Hutson's book - it truly is a fascinating read.
The Chicken Ranch will always live in my heart!
